Following the success of its first appointment under the Future Directors programme, Trust Horizon is now seeking expressions of interest for a new Board Observer.

Established by the Institute of Directors (IoD), the Future Directors programme aims to support the next generation of governance leaders by increasing diversity and broadening perspectives in New Zealand boardrooms.

The programme matches emerging directors with host boards for a 12 or 18-month observation period, giving them valuable exposure to high-level governance and strategic decision-making.

Trust Horizon first joined the programme after seeing the positive impact it had for other organisations, including the Trust’s own Horizon Energy Group. After undergoing the IoD’s search process, Trust Horizon appointed their inaugural Board Observer, Kataraina Monika, who proved a highly successful addition to the board table.

With Kataraina’s tenure coming to a close in July, Trust Horizon is now seeking a new Future Directors candidate to join the trustees as Board Observer. The successful candidate for this non-remunerated role must reside in the Eastern Bay, and be available to attend monthly board meetings.

“Kataraina brought thoughtful insight, strong governance experience, and a valuable perspective to our discussions throughout her time with the Trust,” says Trust Horizon Trustee, Merrin Stables. “Her contribution reinforced exactly why programmes like Future Directors are so important, and we look forward to welcoming our next new voice into the boardroom.”

Kataraina – a Strategic Business Partner at Te Whare Wānanga O Awanuiarangi – found her time with the Trust invaluable.

“My time with Trust Horizon has reinforced that governance is about far more than allocating funding; it’s about making strategic decisions that create long-term impact for our region,” she says. “Through the programme, I’ve had the opportunity to observe significant organisational change, including trust deed and strategy discussions, while learning from experienced trustees with deep governance, sector, and community knowledge. Gaining exposure to the energy industry through conferences and wider engagement has also been incredibly valuable. Programmes like this create genuine pathways for emerging governors and new voices while strengthening future leadership in our region.”

Building on the success of the programme, Trust Horizon now looks forward to welcoming its next Board Observer – continuing its commitment to developing future governance talent across the region.
